A. OVERVIEW
Greetings and welcome to the 2011 Golf Mission Association’s U.S.G.A. Handicap Service, which is processed by the New Jersey State Golf Association, and sanctioned by the United States Golf Association. Please make note that all members of our Handicap Service are eligible to participate in New Jersey State Golf Association events representing the Golf Mission if you reside in New Jersey. The official handicap season begins on Wednesday, April 1, 2011, the first day you can post scores in New Jersey, and ends on October 27, 2011, the last day you can post score in New Jersey. Your personal handicap revisions will be issued by e-mail every two weeks, beginning with the first revision effective date on April 15, 2011.
First and foremost, our U.S.G.A. Handicap Service is wired, and paperless, and those without an e-mail address, and access to the internet, were highly recommended not to join our service, since we can not properly service their needs. If you are on our service, this year you will be responsible for posting all of your GMA Tournament, and away scores directly via the internet to ghin.com. All of your handicap revisions will be e-mailed to you directly from the New Jersey State Golf Association.
If you have never established a handicap previously, it only takes 5 scores, in season, to obtain an official U.S.G.A. Handicap, and scores from last year are acceptable, if played from April 1-October 28 for rounds played in the North East. If you are traveling to Myrtle Beach or other warmer regions this winter, those scores may, also, be utilized providing that you visit and play those courses during their handicap seasons. New players should contact us on April 1 or later, and we will provide them with their GHIN number so they can start posting their scores. All new players should read USGA Handigram No. 3, posted below, to aid you in properly posting your scores.
B. POSTING SCORES:
Post them directly to ghin.com. This can be done from your home computer, or computers set up at golf courses, and you are responsible to post ALL of your scores by this method to save us both time, and to save errors.
NOTE: PLAYERS WILL POST ALL THEIR HOME & AWAY SCORES.
For your convenience ghin.com is linked to our website’s home page at golfmission.com . Handicapping depends on FULL & ACCURATE information. Every golfer shall make sure that ALL their scores, GOOD or BAD, are reported. Incomplete records lead to UNFAIR HANDICAPS.
C. USGA HANDIGRAM No. 3
USGA HANDICAP SYSTEM SCORE POSTING PROCEDURES
1. SCORES TO BE USED Only scores made in 18-hole rounds shall be used, or you may combine the scores of two consecutive nine-hole rounds. If a player plays 13 or more holes, he shall record a score for handicap purposes by adding to the number of strokes he played the total par for the unplayed holes plus any handicap strokes he or she is entitled on the remaining unplayed holes.
2. EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL
a. A score for any hole must be limited to a specific number of strokes for handicap purposes as follows
Handicap & Maximum Score On Any Hole
9 or Less = Double Bogey
10 through 20 = 7
21 through 29 = 8
30 through 39 = 9
b. Each player is responsible for adjusting his or her score using the “Equitable Stroke Control” or “ESC” table, above, before returning it for handicap purposes. Simply add up the number of strokes taken in excess of the ESC formula and deduct them from your actual (gross) score.
c. If a player starts a hole but does not complete it they shall record the score he most likely would have made had the hole been completed.
d. If a player does not play a hole or plays it other than under the Rules of Golf, his score for that hole for handicap purposes shall be par plus any handicap strokes received on that hole.
e. A player without an established USGA Handicap Index shall use, for ESC purposes, the maximum 36.4 for men, 40.4 for women, until he or she has sufficient scores to establish a USGA Handicap Index.
3. SCORES ON ALL COURSES Adjusted gross scores on all courses shall be reported by the player, along with the appropriate USGA Course & Slope Ratings, and the Handicap Committee shall ensure that all acceptable scores are reported for handicap purposes.
4. SCORES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE under the following conditions:
a. When fewer than 13 holes are played.
b. When the round is played in which an inactive season has been established by the governing local Golf Association.
c. When the length of the course is less than 5,000 for men or 4,000 for women and a Slope System is not used, also.
